چکیده

As mobile applications are required to handle more computing-intensive tasks, many mobile devices are designed using VLIW processors for high performance. In VLIW machines where a single instruction contains multiple operations, the power consumption during instruction fetches varies signi cantly depending on how the operations are arranged within the instruction. In this paper, we describe a post-pass optimal operation rearrangement method for low-power VLIW instruction fetch. The proposed method modi es operation placement orders within VLIW instructions so that the switching activity between successive instruction fetches is minimized. Our experiment shows that the switching activity can be reduced by 34% on average for benchmark programs.

VLIW Operation Refinement for Reducing Energy Consumption

The demand for mobile computer power has exploded in the recent years. Variable length VLIW processors offer the necessary performance at low power. Software optimizations are necessary to further decrease the energy consumption. In this article we present a compiler optimization which reduces the dynamic power dissipation resulting from the switching activities during instruction fetch. Energy...

Switching-Activity Minimization on Instruction-Level Loop Scheduling for VLIWDSP Applications

This paper develops an instruction-level loop scheduling technique to reduce both execution time and bus switching activities for applications with loops on VLIW architectures. We propose an algorithm, SAMLS (Switching-Activity Minimization Loop Scheduling), to minimize both schedule length and switching activities for applications with loops. In the algorithm, we obtain the best schedule from ...

Weld: A Multithreading Technique Towards Latency-Tolerant VLIW Processors

This paper presents a new architecture model, named Weld, for VLIW processors. Weld integrates multithreading support into a VLIW processor to hide run-time latency effects that cannot be determined by the compiler. It does this through a novel hardware technique called operation welding that merges operations from different threads to utilize the hardware resources more efficiently. Hardware c...

Code Compression for VLIW Processors

Code compression is an important issue in the design of an embedded system, since memory has been one of the most restricted resources. Most of the previous work in code compression has targeted RISC architectures, although VLIW processors have gained a lot of popularity recently. In this research, we explore methods to the problem of compressing code for VLIW processors. Previous code compress...

Reducing the complexity of instruction-level power models for VLIW processors

Aim of this paper is to propose a high-level power exploration framework based on an instruction-level energy model for VLIW (Very Long Instruction Word) architectures. More specifically, the present paper deals with the reduction of the complexity of the energy model of K -issue VLIW processors from exponential with respect to the number of operations within the Instruction Set O(|I S A|K ) to...
